ORTLOS wurde offiziell 2000 gegründet (domain name ortlos.com - 1999 registriert.) Der Name sagt primär über die Arbeitsweise aus: nicht ortsgebunden, in Netzwerken und überall dort wo es einen Internetanschluß gibt. Das ist eine wichtige Vorraussetzung, weil sich dadurch neue Arbeitswelten und Strukturen ergeben, und der ganze Prozess sich somit stark auf die eigentliche Arbeit auswirkt. Die ‘user’, Experten aus verschiedenen Bereichen, wie Architektur, Web-Design, Medientheorie, Netzkunst, Informations-Technologie, sind sich der Probleme der Städte, in denen sie leben, bewusst. Sobald sie Verbindung hergestellt haben können sie arbeiten in diesem ‘Büro, das niemals schläft’. Das Konzept von ORTLOS ist ein virtuelles Büro zu organisieren mit dem Ziel ein fortschrittliches Instrument für Architektur, städtebauliche Aufgaben und Interface Design im Allgemeinen, zu schaffen, also eine Plattform, ein kreatives Pool, unterstützt durch Informationsdatenbanken. Ortlos ist ein Werkzeug für nomadische Arbeitsweisen.

ORTLOS was founded in 2000 (domain name ortlos.com registered 1999.) and it is a virtual office (or platform) dealing with architectural topics, urban planning issues and interface design in general. Its members are experts from different countries (mainly Austria and USA) with different professions (architects, web designers, media theorists, net artists, IT specialists, among others). The name gives primary information about the working method: not dependent on a certain place to work, but in networks and everywhere the connection to the Internet is existing. Beside that, it is important for the work itself to think and design in trans-local and networked environments. The users are well known with local circumstances and can deal (or not) with the problems of the city they live in. As soon as they have a connection, they could work on projects in this "office that never sleeps". The aim is to generate advanced instruments for architectural and urban design, a sort of platform, a creative pool supported with information and databases. The two main topics of ORTLOS are ”experimental architecture” and ”interface design in urban surroundings”.

ORTLOS architects was founded by Ivan Redi and Andrea Schröttner as a network of interdisciplinary partners, with a commitment to the on-line working methods as well as their strong interest in expanding classical architectural tasks by simulating virtual environments to be applied to future realities, with the use of cutting-edge computer technologies. Their work has been published and exhibited world wide, among others at La Biennale in Venice 2000. They are currently teaching at TU-Graz.
